Mini-camper bag charm |
by Linda Theil
This small duffle is the fourth Weekend Bag from the "Escape Pod Travel Collection" by Diane Spencer-Ogg that I have made. The bag is a gussetted duffle made using a double-birthing method that is, in my experience unique to Spencer-Ogg designs. The small 16x12x6-inch size was designed specifically to fit the carry-on requirements for ultra-low-cost, Irish airline, Ryanair.
This "Journey Duffle" was made for a Michigander traveler who needs a roomy stash for haircare products and equipment,
The jaunty bag is made from the "Joy in the Journey" collection by Dani Mogstad for Riley Blake Designs. The front and interior pocket panels are from the "On the Road Again" four-placemat panel by Katie Doucette for Wilmington. The straps are 1.5-inch-wide Tula Pink designed webbing.
The rumpled look of the bag exterior is due to a mistaken use of a "craft" type interfacing that I mistook for my regular Pellon nonwoven fusible. The problem was exacerbated when a sewing error caused by the subpar interfacing necessitated unbirthing, attempting repair, and rebirthing the bag twice! You may note below that the interior of the bag, properly interfaced, survived this onslaught unscathed.
The gusset and trims are made of Moroccan blue
Mora faux leather from Emmaline Bags in Alberta, Canada.

and a padded interor pocket and bottle sleeve. |
Cute Camper bag charm
I have been obsessed with bag charms ever since Alisa discovered the Hermes pony kits -- see "DIY SLGS" on the AppletonDance blog at
https://appletondance.blogspot.com/2024/01/diy-slgs-thats-small-leather-goods-to.html
So when I came across the "Cute Camper" holiday ornament on pp. 76-77 of the December 2018 edition of the Christmas Quilts & More magazine published by Better Homes & Gardens Special Interest Publications, I thought the handmade, felt ornament would make a perfect bag charm for the "Journey Duffle".
Please see the completed charm at the top of this post. It's so cute -- even if mine might be mistaken for a pirate puppy instead of a camper!
