If you love totes, purses, bags, wallets, and accessories of every kind, you will love Spencer Ogg -- an online resource for bag-making patterns and materials. Diane Spencer Ogg is a genius bag designer, pattern maker, sewing blogger, and Bluprint tutor with a YouTube channel, sewing blog, and bag-making emporium at Spencer Ogg online. Her work is perfection: well-organized and professionally presented.
I recently joined the Spencer Ogg Bag Sewing Group on FaceBook just in time to learn about a clever, new bag Diane designed to use as a container for sharing neighborly gifts during the coronavirus shutdown.
Readers may access a free tutorial and information about how to "Sew a Doorstep Care Pod: on the Spencer Ogg weblog and YouTube channel.
The Spencer Ogg Doorstep Care Pod is about 13x12-inches; but for my pod, I made a moderate adjustment in size to accommodate the pattern of a Stonehenge #3957 panel by Sunshine Cottage for Northcott that I had in my stash. I also used a medium-weight, non-woven, iron-on Pellon interfacing to stiffen the 100%-cotton panel.
The Doorstep Care Pod is simple to sew and modify. The bag has only three pattern pieces: the body piece and two facings; or five pieces, if you include an optional set of flaps that protects the bag's contents from rain, bugs, and dirt.
The bag, as designed, features a hem at the top; but I used a self binding to finish the top, instead of a hem.
The design also features a clever and easy-to-sew bottom with exterior wings.
I filled my my Doorstep Care Pod with a pair of summer-weight CuddleDuds pajamas, Body Shop skincare products, and Russell Stover chocolates and sent it to a doorstep in Rochester PA. Do you think it will make my sister-in-law feel cared for? I hope so.
